A native of the Town of ZhouJiaKo in the Henan Province, Master Yu HuaLong was born on December 1, 1919. HeNan is the residing place of the Northern Branch Shaolin Temple; furthermore, it is the birthplace of the famous TaiJiQuan. HeNan had a long history of loving and respecting martial arts. Master Yu started learning Zha Quan at a young age from Master Liu FengQi who lived on the north side of the village river. He also went to Master Ma XiaoQuan, who lived some 30 kilometers away, and learned various kinds of weaponry along with Zha Quan.
At age 15, Master Yu finished his learning and came home. Soon after that, he learned one year of XinYiLIuHe Quan from Master Chen JinPo, who lived on the south side of the village river. At this point, Master Yu was already well known through the south bank of the village river. It was not long before he was invited to Mr. Yuan ChangQing’s home to teach Zha Quan to his son, Yuan HongLiang. When Master Yu went to Yuan’s house, the 10 circular embroideries hanging on the wall immediately caught his attention. After some thorough investigation, Master Yu found out that Yuan ChangQing was, in fact, a relative of Master Jia (Mai?) ZhuangTu, the grand master of XinYiLiuHe Quan, and Yuan himself a master of XinYiLiuHe Quan. Master Yu accepted Yuan’s invitation and started teaching Zha Quan in Yuan’s village, and at the same time, he learned a lot more about XinYiLiuHe Quan from Yuan as well.
This experience brought Master Yu’s Martial Art skills to a whole new level. If nothing else happened, Master Yu would probably have stayed in HeNan his whole life and would never have met Master Lu SongGao, but at the age of 18, something did happen and master Yu had to leave his hometown.
